Mayamari Project: Balarama's Pastime Place Restoration
mayamarim tatottirya
drishtva rama-parakramam
“(After visiting Sridhara’s house) Sri Gaurahari crossed the place known as Mayamari, having witnessed the valor of Balarama.” (Navadvipa-dhama-mahatmya, Pramana-khanda 4.37)
During the Kurukshetra war, Lord Balarama went on a pilgrimage. When He reached the holy land of Navadvipa, the local people approached Him and informed Him of the turmoil caused by a demon called Mayasura.
Hearing this disturbance caused by the demon, Balarama decides to slay Mayasura to protect the villagers. The fight continued for a long time after which the land here became sunken and turned into a pool of Mayasura’s blood.
Therefore this place has been known as Mayamari since then. Mari means killing. This place is non-different from Talavana in Vrajamandala.
This field came to be known as Mayamari, but the villagers did not know why it had that name. This was identified as an ancient name for this field.
This a humble attempt to restore one of the holy spots (Lila Sthali) in Navadwip in cooperation with HH Jayapataka Swami Maharaj who is the lifetime chairman of Bhaktivedanta Charity Trust.
This is the location where Lord Balarama was approached by Village Brahmanas to rescue them from the ferocious attacks of the demon Mayasura. Balaram fought this terrible demon; this place got sunken due to the long and hard fight and soon got filled up with the blood of the demon and the land became lower than other areas in this dvipa.
This is a local place of worship. The local villagers congregate and offer Ganga puja here regularly and conduct different festivals such as Janmashtami, Rama Navami, Durga Puja, etc.
Lord Balaram blesses us with spiritual strength and protects our abilities. Sponsor on behalf of your children to gain blessings of Sri Balaram/Baladev. 10 minutes from this location is ISKCON Rajapur temple where their Lordships Jagannath, Baladev Subhadra reside.
The pillars, the roof, the temple Kalash, and Balaram’s Lila artwork are all work in progress. We wish to thank the devotees who contributed to the project so far and if you wish to be part of this legacy in restoring this holy place and contribute toward the completion of this temple.
